Of the 4000 different species of cockroach seen in this planet, only around 3 actually cause a problem & are known to invade our workplaces and homes. Some other species of cockroach are similar, but are seen in the home less often than these 3. Each cockroach is slightly different and has its own specific features. Still, they are all pests which can cause great health risks and damage to us and our families.

Distinguishing these cockroaches is quite easy & can aid in extermination methods. It could be the first step in iradication and control. Here are the three main kinds of cockroaches.

American Cockroach

The American cockroach has a reddish brown color and single stripe on the head. It can grow up to 25mm in length. These roaches love the taste of liquor and can often be seen in bars or at home in case you had a party and didn't clean up promptly. They can live for around one and half years, and have an incubation period of 6 to 8 weeks.

German Cockroach

The German cockroach has 2 lighter stripes on the back of its head, and boast of a tan or brownish color. They can grow up to lengths of 15mm. It is probably breeds the fastest among its cousins, giving birth to around 30 to 40 nymphs with an incubation period of 30 days. At this rate, one cockroach can multiply into 30,000 in a year's time. They can live for around 6 months.

Oriental Cockroach

They are probably the biggest of these three. It grows around 25mm in length. These critters are a dark brown or black color with a shiny body & move more slowly than the other cockroaches. They are often referred to as the waterbug 'cause they like to live in damp, dark areas. They are potentially found in cellars or damp mulch. Incubation can last 2 months with about 15 eggs hatching & they can each live for up to 2 years.
