If you kill mosquitoes safe to use around water lilies?

The water lily is in a pot (medium size, for now, then I'll switch to a larger one), but the mosquito larvae is responsible for the pot as it did last year, and always ends up killing the plant. I'll try again this year, but now I will use some form of prevention. Mates are too powerful? Will it kill the plant? If so is there anything else you can recommend? Thanks
