Encephalitis is a rare inflammatory disease of the brain caused by a viral infection. Some 1500 to 2000 cases are reported each year in the United States.

Epidemics are usually caused by insects such as mosquitoes, such as the one that hit St. Louis in 1933. The insect-borne type, which can be purchased either from Aedes or the Culex mosquito is known as primary encephalitis and is collected from domestic or wild animals.

Typical symptoms are acute encephalitis and sudden severe headache, fever, fatigue, nausea and vomiting. In severe cases, it is the rigidity of the neck muscles, tremors and drowsiness that can lead to coma.

"In children, a bulge in the soft spot (fontanelle) and stiff neck are the key symptoms. In older children, pain headache and light sensitivity may be more significant. In adults, mental disorders, severe disorientation to coma, may be the clinical feature most outstanding, "said Dr. David E. Larson, editor in chief of the Clinic" Mayo Family Health Book. "

The result of encephalitis varies from person to person. In some, it may be transient and benign. In other cases, encephalitis can result in memory loss, speech problems, paralysis, hearing or defective vision. Insect-borne encephalitis also has a high mortality rate.

Since mosquitoes are the harbingers of death and disease, must declare war against these deadly insects. Do not give them space to reproduce.

Control playback mosquitoes in pit latrines, water covering the surface with paraffin oil. Another control method is the use of balls of polystyrene (Styrofoam) to form total physical barrier over the water to prevent female mosquitoes from laying eggs. These balls are cheap, nontoxic, and virtually indestructible.
