Bonham now has its own field and the concession on the north bank of the Rufiji - a small (just six houses) and very camp perched market called Sand Rivers on the Rufiji river that you awaken to the sound of hippos snorting, the cry of the osprey, the barking of wild dogs in Africa and the racket ibis hadeda hard.

You can fly directly to the Little River sand runway own Dar-es-Salaam, or you could do what we did, which is to facilitate the gentle way, divesting itself of metropolitan angst by degrees, stopping first at a tent city with charm, called Mbuyini. It sits on a small promontory on a bend in the river and you can spend happy days tootling up and down the river, learn to speak the heron from its black head, close relationship, going picnic by the lakes, bordered by palm Borassus and local package tracking hounds.

So if you're lucky, lucky, Bonham becomes himself up to go upstream by boat, passing storks nesting and pods of hippos, reaching the old-fashioned style pier wood phase of river sand.

In the sand of the river that runs game drives through the 15 or so square miles of private concession Bonham, or walk with a well trained guide through the bush, or going on excursions on the river sure to see hippos, crocodiles, antelopes and buffaloes and hope for a rare sighting of the Rock Pratincole or leopard even rarer.

But above all, have the opportunity to sleep on the sandy riverbank in a net bit. We spent a magical 24 hours walking and a browser with Bonham playing for miles along the river of sand which had everything to ourselves.

We went to sleep looking hyena packs coming to the party of the bones of a buffalo killed by the light of the full moon and listening to the chilling sound of the roaring lion distance.

Breakfasted at dawn on scrambled eggs with bacon and then left to walk back to the base, up small hills for a better view, sometimes silently beside lakes decorated with palm rest drowned, watching a Goliath heron balance precariously on the back of a hippopotamus and flocks of storks open beak floating around the sky.

All this is just a sample to the actual treatment, the What is so special set of Bonham, who is its keeper long walks Selous in the south. The north of the Selous Rufiji is wild by the rules most people - has only six houses (that Mbuyini and river sands are much better); as well as catering to no more than 100 people at once.

But that is crowded compared to the south of the Selous Rufiji. This is serious wilderness country, Peter Matthieson the country, Tom Arnold and very young Bonham explored 16 years ago in what they called "the last true safari" (which Peter Matthieson wrote on the sand in the river). There are no shelters at all - just some temporary camps of tents on the blocks and fields hunting occasionally Bonham mobile.
