Anyone have a recipe for a natural mosquito repellent all?
I live in southern Georgia, and mosquitoes are very bad at this time of year. What I can do to prevent it from biting me? I was using a chemical repellent (like OFF!), but as something that is best for me and for the environment environment. thanks!
Catnip Mosquito Repellent w / Romero Last year, several members of the Iowa State University Department of Entomology presented the results of a study on common catnip. Among its conclusions was the fact that an essential oil of catnip is 10 times more effective to repel mosquitoes potent chemicals such as DEET. Grow your own mosquito repellent ANN LOVEJOY SPECIAL Post-Intelligencer The news is full of horror stories including the spread of West Nile Virus in mosquitoes. At the same time, news came across my desk that seems to promise a simple and natural way to defend against small bugs. DEET is currently the most common active ingredient in commercial mosquito and insect repellents. Unfortunately, many studies suggest that DEET is also a hazardous chemical to humans, especially children. A study conducted at Duke University Medical Center showed that DEET can cause death brain cells and can cause behavioral changes indicative of neurological damage in rats after frequent or prolonged use. In an effort to find a safer alternative, researchers investigated a number of essential oils from plants that are commonly recommended as insect repellents by organic gardeners. Catnip prominently in the list of natural resources destroying insects, and obviously with good reason. In the Iowa study, researchers found that small doses of catnip oil were at least as effective in repelling mosquitoes as 10 times higher dose of DEET (used in typical application rates recommended for commercial products). While researchers do not know why mosquitoes do not like catnip oil, I know a good thing when they see it. Recently, Iowa State University Research Foundation filed a patent for the use of catnip compounds essential oils. Within a few years will likely see many repellents insurance, non-toxic mosquito in the market. Meanwhile, why not grow some mosquito repellent of your own? If you have a sunny patch, well drained lean garden soil, try planting some catnip. The plant you need is a perennial herb called Nepeta cataria. Closely related to ornamental catnip or Nepeta faassenii (or mussinii North), catnip is generally grown as a cat-pleasing or herbal tea by their appearance. Catnip is far from ugly but its soft blue flowers are definitely was produced by their masses of soft hair, foliage gray-green. Like most herbs, it prefers well-drained soils and light. If heavy clay garden, which may have better success with catnip and other herbs, if given a bed mounds or grown on a slope to improve winter drainage. The first year that the catnip plant, you may need that water once or twice, especially if next summer is as hot and dry like this has been. Herbs, however, fall-planted, including catnip, often need very little water in the following summer. Fall and winter rains may help create plants systems deep, strong roots that enhance natural resistance to drought of catnip and many other herbs. Do not feed your fall planted herbs, but are mixed some compound in the soil after planting. A mixture of half compost, half native soil is generally good. Top of the ground with a light blanket of compost (2-3 inches) to help feed the actively growing roots through the cold months. Even in spring, do not feed herbs with anything, but the compost, or at most a mild organic fertilizer multiple use, such as Whitney Farms 5-5-5. Exceeding the fertilizer can cause lush overgrowth of many herbs, leading to the production of dilute or low-quality essential oil. In some cases, herbs like creeping thyme can be killed by commercial fertilizers, so If in doubt, use only a very mild fertilizer and apply at half the rate of application proposed. This summer, I experimented with both the herb vinegar spritzers catnip and catnip infused oils. Both did a good job of keeping mosquitoes and no-see-ums at bay during our summer evenings. If you would like to test yourself here are the simple recipes I used: CATNIP MOSQUITO SPRITZ makes about 3 cups * 2 cups catnip, came * 3-4 cups mild rice rinse herbs with vinegar, roll lightly with a rolling pin, then place them in a clean quart jar and cover with vinegar. Seal jar and store in a dark closet for two weeks. Shake jar lightly every day or so for two weeks. Strain into a clean jar, seal and refrigerate for up to 6 months without use. To use, spray on exposed skin area and outdoor dining. And rosemary oil CATNIP MOSQUITO CHASING Makes about 2 cups. * 2 cups catnip, emerged 1 cup rosemary oil cut * 6-inch florets 2 cups grapeseed or other light oil body care herbal Roll lightly with a rolling pin and place in a clean jar. Cover with oil bottle seal and place in a cool, dark cupboard for two weeks. Shake jar lightly every day or so for two weeks. Strain into a clean jar, seal and refrigerate for a maximum of 8 months unused. To use, rub on exposed skin. http://curezone.com/blogs/m.asp?f=634&i=13 Other methods I've used and / or research: Eat a healthy diet with mostly raw vegetables and most fruits. Eating meat attracts mosquitoes. * Avoid bannanas, chocolates, yogurt, and that attract mosquitoes * Wear long pants and socks with closed shoes during mosquito season * Vitamin B complex to help prevent bites * Avoid dairy products such as milk plugs up the elimination system * Bathe with unscented soap and shampoo to avoid attracting mosquitoes * Avoid wheat products if the infection The virus comes from * Use catnip, rosemary and neem oil to spray on exposed areas of skin (I would add lavender for aroma improvement) * Make a bath with the above essential oils * Avoid going outside during times of increased risk in the dusk and dawn, or at least cover the legs, arms and feet during the early moring and evening * Avoid sugary drinks and alcohol * Eliminate standing water in your area (put a few drops of neem oil or catnip oil in pools of water to prevent eggs from hatching) the growth of your own mosquito repellent http://curezone.com/blogs/m.asp?f=634&i=17
