There are 4000 odd species of cockroach in the world. Only 3, however, are known to invade our workplaces and homes and cause problems. There are a couple of other species that are similar, but can be seen in the home a little less often. Each cockroach has its own particular features & all like slightly different things. However they are all pests and can cause great health risks and damage to us and our families.
Identifying these cockroaches could be the first step in eradication and control. It is pretty easy & can aid in extermination methods. Here are the 3 main types of cockroaches.
American Cockroach
The American cockroach can grow up to 25mm in length. It has a reddish brown color and single stripe on the head. These creatures love the taste of liquor & can often be found in bars or at home in case you had a party & didn't clean up rapidly. They have a life span of up to 1 & half years. Their incubation period is from 6 to 8 weeks.
German Cockroach
These kinds of cockroach sport a brownish or tan color, and 2 lighter stripes on the back of its head. They can grow up to lengths of 15mm. It is probably breeds the fastest in comparison to its cousins, giving birth to around 30 to 40 nymphs with an incubation period of 30 days. That is relatively fast, seeing one of them can multiply to 30,000 in a year's time. These can live for around 6 months.
Oriental Cockroach
Among these 3, the Oriental cockroach is probably the biggest. It grows around 25mm in length. They are a dark brown or black color with a shiny body & move more slowly than the other cockroaches. They are sometimes called the waterbug 'cause they like to live in dark, damp areas. They are most probably seen in cellars or damp mulch. Incubation can last two months with about 15 eggs hatching & they can each live for up to 2 years.
