Of the 4000 odd species of cockroach that roam this planet, only around three actually cause a problem & are known to infest our homes & workplaces. Some other species of cockroach are similar, but are seen in the home less often than these three. Every cockroach is slightly varied and has its own different characteristics. Even So, they are all pests which can cause great health risks & damage to us & our families.

Identifying these cockroaches is quite simple & can aid in extermination methods. It could be the first step in iradication & control. The following are the three major types of cockroaches.

American Cockroach

The American cockroach can grow up to 25mm in length. It has a reddish brown color and single stripe on the head. These creatures love the taste of liquor. Thus, they are often found in bars or at home after party where wine, beer & alcohol was present. They can live for around 1 & half years, and have an incubation period of 6 to 8 weeks.

German Cockroach

The German cockroach sport a tan or brownish color, and 2 lighter stripes on the back of its head. It can grow up to 15mm in length. It is probably breeds the fastest among the cockroaches, giving birth to around 30 to 40 nymphs with an incubation period of 30 days. At this rate, one cockroach can multiply into 30,000 in a year's time. They can live for around 6 months.

Oriental Cockroach

The Oriental cockroach is probably the biggest of these three. It grows approximately 25mm in length. These critters are a dark brown or black color with a shiny body & move more slowly than the other cockroaches. They are often known as the "water bug" 'cause they like to live in dark, damp areas. They are most likely seen in damp mulch or cellars. Incubation can last two months with about 15 eggs hatching and they can each live for up to 2 years.
