It is difficult to find areas that are not very developed for tourists these days. As soon as one is discovered, the world and soon finds out he has lost its charm.
Fortunately, there are still some places that are untouched by mass tourism, where you have the opportunity to experience local life to the fullest. Lakshadweep Islands, off the coast of Malabar in Kerala, India is one of those places. The local government has made it their mission to keep it that way, by promoting tourism in the islands can only be sustained, and keep everything as eco-conscious as possible: high-rise buildings are banned, only toilets "bio" are allowed, rainwater is collected for fresh water conservation, electricity is supplied by solar energy, and even go so far as to encourage tourists (and local) to burn coconut husks instead of using pesticides to combat mosquitoes and other pests (Bravo I say. If only governments everywhere could follow suit).
The islands, atolls and reefs of Lakshadweep are actually the mountaintops of undersea volcanic mountain range, the Chagos-Laccadive Plateau (which also include the Maldives and Chagos). The name suggests that there are many islands in the group (the Lakshadweep Malayalam word translates to "hundreds of thousands of islands"), but in reality there are only 36. Ten are inhabited, but in line with the effort to limit tourism, foreign visitors are allowed only 3 of these: Bangaram, Agatti and Kadmat, and you need permission from the Government of India to be able to visit.
There are a couple of yacht charter companies on the continent, and you have the option to fly to Agatti Island (1.5 hour flight) from Cochin and to meet the boat and crew there, or starting from Cochin and browsing, it takes about 3 days. Skippered Charters are hard to find here, but with skipper and crew are readily available.
Lakshadweep has a tropical monsoon climate, and the best (driest) time to visit is from December to March. The air temperature is maintained at the 80 and 90, and water in the than 70 years around 80 years low. All other ingredients that make a getaway paradise is here too - white sand beaches in the shadow of the coconut palms, turquoise lagoons, brilliant coral reefs and an abundance of colorful sea life. Food and drink, however, is not a main reason for visiting - The islands are not exactly known for its cuisine, and 95% Muslim, alcohol is not permitted (except at Bangaram, Bangaram Island Resort and consequently has a well-stocked bar). The main reason people come to visit is the sea and all activities connected with these activities: scuba diving (the islands are known as one of the best diving spots in the world), snorkeling, kayaking, canoeing, swimming and sunbathing.
The group's westernmost island, Agatti, hosts the only airport and one of two ski resorts (Agatti Island Beach Resort) in Lakshadweep. It has one of the most beautiful lakes in the area, Lakshadweep history museum and a mosque built in the 16th century.
Bangaram is uninhabited, except for staff and guests at the aforementioned Bangaram Island Resort. Spend an afternoon here snoozing on a beach of sand to the soothing sounds of the sea, or, if you want more action into it. The diving here is fantastic and you can expect to see sharks, rays, eels, turtles and a host of angels colorful coral reef fish -, clowns, butterflies, surgeons. If you are new to diving and want to give it a try, the dive center offers courses in the complex.
Diving is also a popular pastime in Kadmat, the only island in the group to have gaps on both sides. There is an Institute of Sport Water and Dive School here, in addition to diving, windsurfing and paragliding offers and also rents canoes, pedal boats and glass bottomed boats. Kadmat, which only allows 48 tourists at a time, is becoming increasingly popular with honeymooners looking for privacy in paradise.
