planning a trip to Mexico and is a toss up between Cancun and Playa del Carmen?

Now the views in which I go? This will be my first either. Also any suggestions for hotels? I am sure that a little snob, I want a good hotel, but I'm cheap. I have used trip advisor. I'm leaning towards "Hilton Cancun hotels or Marriott (Casa Magna) and mosquitoes PDC beach or Fairmont Mayakoba snob when I say I mean I want a good hotel to get the money. I want the best place to have a vision nice clothes, nice furniture, nice decoration. I suppose I should mention that I'm 34, and the party scene, I am not the "all inclusive" because I want try a variety of restaurants. Thanks to all replies so far keep coming.

I have to agree with the Lord, if you are under 25 and go to clubs and getting smashed at night, after Cancún is the place. I really suggest one of the all-inclusive hotels if you are a drinker and restaurants in Cancun are quite expensive. Hotel location does not really matter too much in Cancun, because most of them are in the hotel zone. Beach is 40 miles south of Cancun, has more of a bar scene with some clubs. There are many reasonable restaurants in Playa. Lots of shopping and you will be closer to most activities throughout the Yucatan area. Cozumel is located opposite the beach too. Check out some of the hotels located in Playacar, these hotels are much closer to the city. The Fairmont Mayakoba is a good hotel, the Riu are great all-inclusive, all located in the Playacar area. I love Sandy, but I'm in my 30 and passed the day the club.
