Mosquitoes are insects that carry disease-causing viruses and parasites from one person to another without catching disease themselves. They are transmitters of fatal diseases such as dengue, malaria, etc. Both male and female mosquitoes are nectar feeders, but the females of many species are also able of drinking blood. Females do not take blood for their own survival, but they do need supplemental substances such as protein and iron to produce eggs. By drinking blood from one animal to another, they transmit harmful bacteria.
There are numerous methods employed for mosquito control, but first we should have knowledge on their life cycle. Mosquitoes go through four stages in their life cycle: egg, larva, pupa, and adult or imago. Adult females lay eggs in stagnant water like salt-marsh, lake, and even in plastic bucket. The first three stages are aquatic and last 5-14 days, depending on the species and the ambient temperature; eggs hatch to become larvae, then pupae. The adult mosquito emerges from the pupa as it floats at the water surface. Adult females can live up to a month - more in captivity - but most likely do not survive more than 1-2 weeks in nature.
Now, we all know that mosquitoes can survive and flourish in stagnant water and dark sites. So, it is essential to make certain that no still water will be formed in your area. Clean your drainage and pipelines on a regular basis. Make sure that there are no leakages.
In places near bodies of water like pond, remove all floating debris and other solid garbage material from the water. Solid garbages render productive area for mosquitoes so make sure that they are cleaned. It is also useful to breed mosquito-eating fish in water to help control mosquitoes.
