Diatomaceous earth can be used as a fly repellent for farm animals?
My grandfather has a lot of problems with flies in their cattle. This year flies spread along its entire herd conjunctivitis and that took forever (and a decent amount of money) to get rid of the infection. I heard that the flies are also spreading a disease that causes deer to overheat and die. I know of is used to prevent fleas and other pests pets, so I thought maybe it could be used in livestock as well. Any opinions?
DE is still widely accepted as safe and natural pest control alternatives. I've used with success in livestock (sheep, goats and poultry). DE powder is fossil fuels - that tiny, irregular pieces crushed exoskeleton of invertebrates. It has been found that the ED is small enough to penetrate the exoskeleton of insects and parasites (both internal and external). It penetrate the bodies of insects and eggs and basically make it dry. While not offering immediate control offered by toxic aerosols, Germany is widely accepted as an organic method of pest control, and is much more environmentally friendly. We dusted off our animals to him and that certainly helps the flies, mites and lice problems. DE can also be sprinkled over manure piles to prevent fly eggs from hatching, and added in small quantities to feed animals to help control internal parasites. I can not say with 100% certainty about the effectiveness for livestock, but has done wonders for our animals here. Make sure it is food-grade, not pool grade - as grade has heated pool and other chemicals have been added. For more information on it, be sure to contact your veterinarian for specific information involving farm and livestock use.
