Ants are highly adaptable representatives of the insect kingdom, able to exist in places with the most hostile living conditions unsuitable for other flora and fauna. Ants live within a highly structured colony, and their number can reach up to more than a million, the members of which are the worker ants, the soldiers, and the solitary queen. Ants are appreciated in their natural habitat as gauge of crucial shifts in the environment. Leaf cutter ants feed exclusively on fungus & live only within their colony. They come in various sized castes to perform various functions that are to be executed in the colony.
Ants that have a sac of poison are known as the fire ant. Their "poison" is known as piperidine alkaloids.
Lastly, one of the largest and most primeval types of ants are the Australian bulldog ants. Being of a primitive variety, they have only one chromosome.
