I went to my first holiday to the tropics recently. I was afraid of getting a disease, so I did a little research, and took some precautions. Here are some tips I found useful.

1. Get your shots.

I spent a short time in areas relatively free of diseases by mosquitoes. The key word is "relatively". A two-week vacation in an urban area is probably fine. If you are staying for months, or in an area marked as dangerous, get your shots well in advance. Do not leave it until the last minute, since by then it's too late! The drugs need some time to 'kick', and your doctor may have to order them in advance.

2. Get an insect repellent.

I made one for mosquitoes through mixing citronella with olive oil. Citronella is an essential oil (an essence). I rubbed the mixture on the exposed parts throughout the morning and evening, and then washing. He seemed to do the trick. I put too much oil on, I think, so it smelled a bit. Better that, if bitten, I say!

3. Wear long sleeves and pants.

I also wore socks in bed. A pest can not be bought! Mosquitoes are doing what comes naturally, they need blood to live. It is unfortunate that only can transmit parasites when they bite. Denied food, and all we're going to bring back from their holidays are a silly hat and some souvenir photos. To use garments long sleeve dress in bed, you'll have a room with a fan and air conditioning. There is no need for it to be freezing cold only, with a slight breeze.

4. Air conditioning.

Air conditioners and fans are supposed to divert mosquitoes, which is good. Avoid "going native" and thinks that is as strong as the locals. They get malaria and dengue fever, so be sure of that.

5. Use of mosquito nets.

Do what you can to keep at bay. Paranoia is good!

6. Avoid ice and salads

Ice may have fecal coliforms. Depends on what water it has been since. Salads can be prepared by low-wage workers who have forgotten to wash your hands. In Muslim countries, often do not use toilet paper, just a hose, so if staff have not been scrupulous about personal hygiene ...

You may feel self-conscious about refusing. Want to make your holiday season marred by a in the hospital, in a third world country, just for the sake of avoiding shame? People like people who are forthright, so stick to their guns.

7. Do not drink the water.

A country can have a semblance of modernity, but what separates the men from the boys is the sewage system. Tap water is not can filter properly. Drink bottled water or boiled water you have yourself. Get a kettle, and boil until it every day, then put water in his water bottle in the morning. Easy.

8. Drink plenty of water.

A few sips now and then, instead of one liter at a time. You save on trips to the bathroom!

9. Stay out of the sun.

There is a reason the locals are relaxed, it's too hot to run as it does at home. Tan is actually skin damage. Due to depletion of the ozone layer, you may be getting more of a golden tan. Who cares if you do not go home tan? Ladies especially will appreciate later this year, when the sisters have leathery skin from roasting on the beach. Nothing less 'cool' of a white man with sunstroke, either.

When traveling in the tropics, it is better to be paranoid. I hope you can still enjoy your vacation!
